Earl of Selkirk
050 [Situation] About 5/8 Mile S. [South] of the town of Kirkcudbright.
A large plantation on the farm of Cannee the wood of which consists of Oak, Ash Beech Firs etc. It took its name from a "Gipsy Chief" who had made this wood his principal residence called Murray or Morrow "probably a corruption of Moor and from his black complexion was called "Black Morrow or Murray" his giant strength and ferocity made him the terror of the Stewartry, and especially the Lower and more wealthy part of the district suffered much by his depredations." Young McLellan son of the former Laird of Bombie, anxious to recover his father's land, but not daring to make an attack on Black Murray personally, filled a Well beside his residence in the wood with Spirits, of which the Gipsy chief drank so freely that he soon fell a sleep, which McLellan perceiving him Sprang from his hiding place, And at one blow evered his head from the body of the Black Murray and with it upon the point of his Sword proceed to the King. , and from which circumstance he reganed his father's large domains. "In the above King's reign (James II) this portion of Galloway was infested with a company of Gipsies from Ireland, whereupon the King issued a proclamation bearing , who ever should dispute them , and bring in their Captain dead or alive, should have the Barony of Bombie for his reward, So it happened the brave young McLellan was restored back to his father's possessions for this remarkable Action, and he took for his crest a Moor's head on the point of a Sword, and Think on, for his Motto."
