003.14 This Church is coeval with Maryculter House being erected soon after 1167 AD. as a Chapel of the Knights Templars with graveyard &c. attached, and Continued as a R.C. [Roman Catholic] Chapel until 1560 when it became the Parish Church of the Established religion and (continued) as such up to 1777 when the present Parish Church, Manse, &c. were erected. This Church then fell into disuse and decay so that at present the walls only remains to a few feet in height, the graveyard is yet sometimes used for interments and Contains several fine monuments and other relics & the Sculptured Effigies of a Knight and Lady Supposed to be of the family of Menzies of Pitfodels, and which is situated within the S.E. [South East] walls of the old Church.
