"Castle Ban" (From observation and enquiries made.) "This is a circular Mound (and
seems to be Semi Artificial) the Summit of which is tabular. and has been surrounded by
a fosse, which is yet visible (on its eastern or landward side) and which ends at the entrance.
(See (a) on coast, trace No. 2 ) Mr. Kennedy an intelligent farmer of South Cairn has never heard any traditional
or recorded stories concerning it: but supposes it to be one of those Moats? (Forts) erected either by
the danes, or (more probably) by the aborigines ; either as a Watch Tower to alarm the interior, on the
approach of an energy: or, as a place of refuge, or defence. - in this opinion of Mr. Kennedy's
the adjacent Farmers coincide.- "Castle Ban" is the name given by all the inhabitants
within 5 miles to this object,- "Castle Butt" - some of the Farmers are of opinion, that this takes its name
from being the "Butt", or "Base", of Castle Ban". |

This Tower which is the form of a cylinder was Built by Colonel Ross late of Balsarroch to the memory of his wife it is about 15 feet high & 25 ft. [feet] in circumference & [reads] the following inscription
Marian Hill
1802
A prevalent belief with neighbourhood is that this Tower was erected to a deceased daughter's memory & that the name was marian, & the tower being built upon a hill induced Colonel Ross to attach Hill to Marian . but this in my opinion is quite absurd his wife 's maiden name I presume has been Marian Hill. |

This hill was called Craigengillan until the Year 1802 when colonel Ross of Balsarroch erected a tower on it to the memory of his wife" Some said it was to his daughters memory but the inscription it shows it was not his daughter as the name would have been Ross & the inscription runs thus . Marian Hill 1802 which proves that if erected to any persons namely it must have been to the whole name was Marian Hill still a great many people in the neighbourhood assert it was to be a daughter, of an old servant of the family & others whose authority is good Says it was to his wife's memory |
