"Castle Ban" (From observation and enquiries made.) "This is a circular Mound (and
seems to be Semi Artificial) the Summit of which is tabular. and has been surrounded by
a fosse, which is yet visible (on its eastern or landward side) and which ends at the entrance.
(See (a) on coast, trace No. 2 ) Mr. Kennedy an intelligent farmer of South Cairn has never heard any traditional
or recorded stories concerning it: but supposes it to be one of those Moats? (Forts) erected either by
the danes, or (more probably) by the aborigines ; either as a Watch Tower to alarm the interior, on the
approach of an energy: or, as a place of refuge, or defence. - in this opinion of Mr. Kennedy's
the adjacent Farmers coincide.- "Castle Ban" is the name given by all the inhabitants
within 5 miles to this object,- "Castle Butt" - some of the Farmers are of opinion, that this takes its name
from being the "Butt", or "Base", of Castle Ban".
