097 | This name applies to an Island Situated in Loch Brora the figure of which is a Parallelogram Surrounded by a perpendicular wall about Six feet above the Surface of the Water and only accessable by two stairs which front the South and East. This Island was formerly used as a stonghold by the Earls of Sutherland part of being appropriated to Lodgings, the remainder being laid out as Garden, all trace of a building has now disappeared in consequence of quantities of Earth being spread over the surface, and it has been planted lately. "Among many reports of the good purposes of the Island there is a traditionary story repeated with pleasure by the inhabitants to this day, they tell, that, on a certain occasion the neighbourhood was suddenly invaded by a numerous army of Caithness men, which they were not prepared to resist, upon this occasion they fled to the Island for an asylum, where they were secure from assaults of the enemy, upon this the invaders were so enraged, that they attempted daming up the narrow mouth of the Loch, at which River breaKs out and had made such progress in the worK that the islanders were obliged to taKe to their boats in the night time, to accomplish there the Seasonable assistance of the Clan Gun, who had marched from Strathulie upon hearing of the danger of their countrymen, the Caithness men in consequence of this assistance met with a total defeat."
