[Reverend] John Caw Statistical Account of Airth Ph [Parish] Statistical Account of Larbert Ph [Parish] Valuation Roll for 1855-6 Grassom's County Map Johnston's County Map The parish of Bothkennar is in the County of Stirling, Presbytery of Stirling, Synod of Perth and Stirling. The word Bothkenner is of Celtic origin and Signifies the small arable fen or marsh._ A name highly descriptive of the situation of the parish, which is very small, all arable, and appears at first to have been marshy, from having been made up from the alluvial deposits of the Firth of Forth. A new Church was built in 1789 and it is more than Sufficient for the Accommodation of the parish. A new manse was built in 1816, at an expense of 1575£, and is, to the honour of the Heritors, the best in the County. The Stipend is 17 Chalders of Victual and the Teinds are exhausted. The glebe consists of 4 Scotch Acres of the best land. There is no village in the parish except a small portion of Carronshore. Falkirk is the nearest market town. In the Centre of which there is a wooded draw-bridge for the Purpose of letting vessels pass. There is also a half-penny levied on all persons crossing, for the purpose of defraying the Annual expense connected with the draw-bridge. It is a County bridge.

[Reverend] William Stevenson Mr J Ferguson 025.09 A small but remarkable river which takes its rise in Carron Bog near the western extremity of the county. During the upper half of its course it flows among bleak hills and rocks, and over a precipice above twenty feet called Auchinlilly-linn-spout. It then winds its way over a cultivated country where its waters are turned to advantage by giving motion to several large paper mills near Denny. A few miles further eastwards its waters are conveyed into the great reservoir at the celebrated "Carron Works". It forms the parish boundary between Falkirk & Larbert and at Carronshore, to which it is navigable for small vessels, it assumes the proportions of a river and from thence to its confluence with the Firth of Forth below Grangemouth it is called River Carron. Its whole length is fourteen miles.

[Reverend] William Stevenson Mr. J Fergusson 025.05 ; 025.09 A noble estuary which receives the water of the River Forth and the drainage of nearly 1000 square miles. It is navigable as far as Alloa for vessels of 400 tons burthen and from which place it may be said to begin as it partakes of the expansion and other properties of an arm of the sea, until opposite Grangemouth it is 2¾ miles broad at High Water and only one mile at Low Water. It divides the counties of Stirling, Linlithgow & Edinburgh, from those of Perth, Clackmannan & Fife. It is studded with several beautiful Islands, the most prominent of which are Inchgarvie, Cramond Isle, Inchkeith and the Bass Rock, and near the latter its waters are lost in the German Sea.
