025.05 ; 025.09 | A noble estuary which receives the water of the River Forth and the drainage of nearly 1000 square miles. It is navigable as far as Alloa for vessels of 400 tons burthen and from which place it may be said to begin as it partakes of the expansion and other properties of an arm of the sea, until opposite Grangemouth it is 2¾ miles broad at High Water and only one mile at Low Water. It divides the counties of Stirling, Linlithgow & Edinburgh, from those of Perth, Clackmannan & Fife. It is studded with several beautiful Islands, the most prominent of which are Inchgarvie, Cramond Isle, Inchkeith and the Bass Rock, and near the latter its waters are lost in the German Sea. |
