133.12 | A large village situated at the south base of the Ochil Hills. The greater part of it is comparatively new, having been built within the last twenty years. The principal street is that part of the turnpike road from Stirling to Kinross intersecting it from west to east. The houses on each side of this street are chiefly two storeys; in the rest of the village the houses are mostly but one storey. Woollen manufacture is carried on here to a considerable extent, and gives employment to most of the inhabitants. It has three churches, four schools, a branch of the Union Bank of Scotland, one hotel, a town hall, several very good shops, and two small publichouses. Besides the mills worked by steam power, there are a number of buildings in which handloom weaving is carried on. |
