Walker, Statistical Account 018.15 ; 018.16 ; 024.03 ; 024.04 A richly wooded hill rising abruptly from the carse land and from which the parish is supposed to derive its name. The gaelic word "Ard" in Ardhe signifying a hill, and if this supposition be correct it furnishes strong grounds for the opinion that the parish, which for the most part presents a complete level, owes its name to what is well known by the appellation of the Hill of Airth.
