The name of this parish is of doubtful origin - chalmers, in his Caledonia, gives two conjectures; one, that it may have been derived from "Sprous", a proper name , and "Tun" a dwelling; the other, that "Sprus" in the Cornish dialect signifying "Grain", "Spruston" may "denote the place "Fertile in grain". This latter is a very appropriate derivation. In figure and extent the parish forms nearly a square of about 4 miles. It is bounded on the North, by the parish of Eccles. Co. [County] of BerwicK; on the East by the parish of Carham Co. [County] of Northumberland; on the South East & S [South] by the parish of Linton; on the S.W [South West] by Eckford, West by Kelso, & North West by Ednam all four being in Roxburghshire. |

[continued from page 1] Sprouston was a Rectory held by Kelso Abbey in a charter dated 1128. There were two chapels in the parish independently of the parish church one at Hadden where the Abbot of Kelso granted to Bernard de Howden the right to build a private chapel, where "he and his guests might hear divine service all the days of the year except on Christmas Day, Easter day and the feast of St Michael" when they were obliged to attend the parish church. This chapel nor the site of it cannot now be discovered. The Barony of Lempitlaw, which forms the southern division of the parish, was originally a separate parish, but was, at a time which has not been ascertained united to Sprouston. Part of the ruins of the church [continued on page 3] |

"Hadden Staut" and "Redden Burn" are frequently spoken of in Border History as the spots on which the English & Scotch commissioners met for the fixing of boundaries and for the setting of other territorial disputes. "Hadden Rig" was the scene of a conflict in 1540. between the scots and 3000 Englush horse in which the latter were defeated. There are two villages in the Parish, Sprouston and Lempitlaw - the former about 200 yards from the tweed and the latter in the extreme S.E. of the parish, it consists of [continued on page 4] |
