The name of this Parish was originally written Howenham and Hounham, which in the Saxon would signify the dwelling-place or mansion of Owen, - a distinguished individual - as is stated - who had his residence here in the 12th Century. Hownam may therefore be recommended here as in better keeping with the original derivation that Hounam.
The Parish of Hownam is bounded on the North by those of Eckford and Morbottle on the East by Morbottle and Northumberlandshire, on the South by Northumberlandshire and Oxnam and on the West by Oxnam and Jedburgh. There is no part of another Parish situate within the limits here assigned to Hownam nor is there a detached portion of it within the boundaries of any other Parish. It approaches in form a parallelogram stretching N.N.W. [North North West] but with irregular outline. It measures in extreme length 7 miles and in extreme breadth 4 3/4 miles and has an Area of about 15,108 Impl. [Imperial] Acres, of which there may be about 941 acres arable, 150 wood, 1675 heath and moss and 13,342 Sheep pasture. A broad range of the Cheviot Hills runs along the South and sends offshoots so far inland as to cause the Parish to be considered as an entirely hilly, and pastoral district, towards the West and North-West the district declines in elevation - becoming there little more than
