Chalmers quotes from the "New Statistical Account" and Morton has been guided by both Chalmers & the Statistical Account. therefore the three authorities entered are not worth more than one. The following extract from Jeffrey's History of Roxburghshire respecting this subject is given as he differs from the three authorities entered in page - " Ancrum is one of the oldest towns in Scotland.
