"The extent of the parish is about 6 miles Square; it is bounded on the west by the parishes of Port-Glasgow, Greenock, Inverkip and Largs; on the east by Killallan and Houston; on the south by Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch; and on the north by Erskine and the river Clyde,
The general appearance of the parish partakes of the Highland character. The lands in general rise in gentle swells from the river and in some places are rocky and moorish. Here and there are clumps of planting, which give beauty and variety to the Surrounding Scenery, This is particularly the case towards the South, The Village is about 350 feet above the level of the Sea, and few Spots command a more beautiful view than the rising grounds on the Shore, At certain seasons of the year, there are heavy falls of rain, attended with high" winds |

006 003 |
This vale may be said to extend from "Mansfield" to "Craigbet" (from VI.2 to VII.13) and, preserving the feature from "Craigbet", to "Bridge of Weir", in Houston Parish. It is of a uniform shape as described by Crawford in his History of Renfrew. Between "Mansfield" and "Blacksholm", in this Parish, the Valley on each side of the "Gryfe" appears from ¼ to ½ Mile, between "Blacksholm" and "Duchall House", it becomes expansive, particularly towards the South-west, converging again between "Duchall House" and "Craigbet", and ultimately teminating at "Bridge of Weir". |

"The greatest expanse of country, of a uniform feature. is a hollow plain, shelving from N [North] & S [South] towards the Gryfe, and its tributary streamlets in the centre. More than 6000 acres of this description of soil are situated on one unbroken expanse in the heart of the Vale of Strathgryfe in this parish." P396 Crawfords History |

Near to this river (Grief) upon the confluence of two rivulets, stand the Castle and Barony of Duchal, the seat & designation of the Barons Lyll. The first mention I find of this family is in that grant which "Baldwin de Bigres" made to the Monks of Pasly, of the church of Innerkip, where "Radulphhus de Insula" is mentioned among the witnesses thereto. Likeas "Radulphhus de Insula Dominus de Duchal" is mentioned in the Register of that Monastery, as witness to several donations to that Abby an. An extensive tract of moor land extending from "Creuch Hill", west of the Parish to "Thornly Bank", South-east; North-east and South-east by the Several farms; and South-west and South by the Parish boundary.
Several proprietors in the Parish Claim a right of pasturage for a certain number of Sheep on this moor and also for cutting peat. In "Crawfurds History" of Renfrew it mentions that every proprietor claims of this Moor whatever breadth of Said Moor joins with his other lands as far as the Water runs to the Middle Centre of Said Moor towards their other forementioned possessions".— Robert Lang of "Gateside" and Neil Macmillan of Muirhouse, two of the Claimants with several others state, that this Moor has never been divided so as to shew the extent, by a boundary line, belonging to each individual Claimant. |

An agricultural Village in rapid decay, mainly owing to the enlargement of farms and consequent reduction of the population. Nearly half the houses are either roofless or untenanted; the remainder are very old and in bad condition and inhabited mostly by the very poorest of persons. The population number about 300. A cattle show takes place here twice in three years. There are three places of worship in the village, formerly there were four. The parish formerly mentained, according to the "Statistical Account" Six Schools, these have dwindled to two. One is the Parochial School, the other a voluntary school at Syde. |

The present Parish Church was renewed or built on the Site of Old Church about 30 years ago. There are however two portions of the Old church remaining, on the South Side, and that on the South-east side of the new erection. These two portions are said to be the remains of the Ancient Church of Kilmalcolm, alluded to in the "Parochials Scotice", in which it is supposed to be one of the numerous Churches dedicated to St Columba. Again these portions have for many generations contained the tombs of the families of Duchal and Glencairn. |

Very little of this camp remains to be seen, the ground whereon it stood has been frequently ploughed up. Its position has been pointed out by the present Occupier of the land who razed it for Cultivation Several years ago. The ground is flat at the top with a slight inclination on the outside. In Crawfurd's History it is considered to be the vestige of a Roman Camp. |
