This is supposed to mark the Site of the Old Chapel mentioned in the "Statistical Account" of the Parish, on the Prieston ground. John Spier who occupied the present dwelling house of "Prieston" for some time, considers, from what has been told him by a few of the old Residenters of the Parish, now dead, this to be the place where the Old Chapel stood. |

"A little to the east of the Castle, there are the
vestiges of an old Romish Chapel; though nothing
remains but the foundation, yet the present tenant,
Robert Donaldson, says, his father remembered the
walls three feet high. The floor was of clay, which
being dug, contained human bones. The farm
is called Prieston. The house remains the same
as when the priest lived in it."

Castle Hill
North from Clochodrick, on the other side of the hills, stands
an old narrow castle, anciently the residences of the
Knoxes. About 120 yards south east of this castle,
on an elevated rock, which overtops the castle, is a
green hill, all of forced earth. It is now called Castle hill". "This earthen hill is of a
quadrangular form; the sides facing the four cardinal points. A trench, dry out of the
solid rock, surrounds its base, on the East and part of the North and South sides". "Each
side of this hill or mound, is about 30 yards at the bottom, & 19 at the top. It is 7 yards in
height". "There has been an entrance into it on the Eastern side". "I am inclined to think this
mound has been a fort, or outpost of the Romans, when stationed at Paisley, and intended
to keep the inhabitants of the mountains in check". Old Statistical Account. |

Within the bounds of the said camp is a projecting portion of rock, (pointed out by the authorities here quoted) by tradition Known as "Wallace's Chair". Here it is supposed Wallace sat, "while he enticed the English forces into a bog" at the bottom where they perished". The ground beneath is of a light springy nature, and may have been a swamp at one period. |

"On the top of Barhill, formerly mentioned,
in a commanding situation, are the remains
of an old Danish encampment. It consists
of a semicircular parapet of loose stones towards
the south, and defended, on the North, by the
perpindicular basaltic rocks, already mentioned.
The tradition concerning it here among the people,
is, that it was an encampment of the celebrated
Sir William Wallace: and they shew a pinnacle of rock, where they say Wallace sat, while
he enticed the English forces into a bog at the bottom of the rock, where they perished.
But as our historians make no mention of this, I am inclined to think, the fortification
from its circular form, of Danish origin." - Old Statistical Account.

Camp Continued.
"Upon the Barr Hill, to the easward of this village, may be traced the remains
of a small camp; by some supposed from its semicircular form, to have been of
Danish origin; by others, it is believed to have been merely a post of observation
when the country was frequently torn by feuds and intestine commotions. For either purpose
it is, from situation, admirably adapted; the one side defended by lofty precipitous rocks
of greenstone, the other guarded against any sudden surprise, by a long steep though
regular ascent from the plain below; on which side it was, moreover, defended by a
rampart of stones, though now not exceeding 3 feet in height. The best evidence
of its former importance is, perhaps, that it has not been levelled to the ground ages ago. The
enclosure may altogether exceed half an acre, and commands in every direction a
most extensive prospect. Among the columns above mentioned may be remarked
a seat or natural "armed chair", dignified by tradition with the title of Wallaces
seat. Its peculiar form seems owing to the circumstance of the top of one of the
columns, which are articulated, having been removed from its original place"

This is the ruins or remains of the "Chapel" alluded to in "Chalmer's Caledonia" which was founded by Thomas Crawford of "Auchinames". It is, perhaps, 450 years old. The walls are at present about 4 feet in height; pains seem to have been taken to preserve them, for they are faced with cut stone and railing of Iron on the top; the Inclosed to serve as a private Burial ground. |

This Town is delightfully situated in a Valley towards the South part of the Parish, placed, on account of the elevated ground which partly surrounds it on the South and East sides. There are four leading thoroughfares, named in their several localities. The houses vary from one to two stories, mostly in good condition; those near "The Cross" are the oldest, particularly the "Old house", which appears to have been a long time in existance. There are no Public Works of any note here. There are 2 Churches, 2 Schools, 1 Post-Office, 1 Gas Works for supplying the houses and Streets with Gas, together with a Bank, 2 Inns and several Public Houses. All of which are situated in the Town. It is watered on the south by the Kilbarchan Burn. |

"About 2 miles west of the village, on an elevated plain is situated a huge stone called Clochodrick. This name is supposed to be a corruption of the words Cloch o druids, the stone of the druids. It consists of the same species of whinstone of wh. [which] the neighbouring hills are composed. This stone is about 22 ft. [feet] long 17 ft. [feet] broad, and 12 ft. [feet] high. It is of a rude oval figure extending east & west; but several fagments have been broken off, either from design, or by the injuries of the weather. It seems to rest on a narrow base below, and perhaps like other druidical stones was capable of being moved; but the lower part is now fillled up with stones gathered from the land over wh. [which] the grass is grown" Old Stat Acct. [Statistical Account]
It derives its name from the Gaelic Clach-na dhruidbeaid, the Druid's stone. It is supposed that this stone is the remains of a druidical temple & that it was the alter on wh. [which] the priests offered sacrifices. But the circle of smaller stones, wh. [which] had probably surrounded it, and the grove of oaks, had all been removed by the husbandry of succeeding ages. Fowlers Paisley directory
There are no "large grey stones" visible (see old St Acct. [Statistical Account]) around Clochodrick Stone, to verify the supposition that at one time it was within a sacred enclosure. It will be seen from the derivation given in Fowlers Paisley directory, that the word stone (Clochodrick Stone) is superflous. It is generally called "Clochodrick Stone" |

Druidh - a Druid - Jamieson
"This Parish contains some remains of
Antiquity, the most remarkable of which is a huge fragment of
a rock called "the Clochodrick stone". It is supposed to have
formed part of a Druidical temple, & the supposition is coun
tenanced by the name, which is apparently a corruption of
the British words Cloch-y-Drywd, the Stone of the Druids."

a huge stone, called Clochodrick. This name is suposed to be a
corruption of the words Cloch o Druids, the stone of the Druids."

From two to three miles westward of this village, there is situated
on St Bride's Burn","a stone of uncommon dimensions, named,
