STONE COFFIN CONTAINIING HUMAN BONES FOUND HERE [South Mound] 007.15 Houstouns of "Houstoun". In consequence of a private dispute or quarrel between these two Houses, the retainers belonging to both were collected upon opposite grounds. When a conflict took place between them, the Mounds are the supposed Grounds whereon they stood. It is not known that any remains were ever found within this "mound", or in the other, but it is supposed, that if the Conflict, as above stated, took place, those who fell were interred in them. On account of the statements made in the "Old Stat. [Statistical] Acct. [Account]", and other records, in reference to remains having been found in Stone Coffins, Urns and other receptacles, in various Parts of this Parish, at different times; the oldest and most influential authorities have been Consulted. Such as those above enumerated, and the result has been that only two places, (Viz-: near the "Chapel" farm steading, and the place marked a little to the south of this Mound,) are so far known or discovered to these Parties. At the place marked on trace, south of the "Mound" was found, some years ago. a Stone Coffin containing human bones.

"About 20 years ago, when the country people in
this parish were digging for Stones to enclose their
farms, they met with Several chests or coffins of
flag stones, set on their edges, Sides, and ends, and
covered with the same sort of Stones above, in which
were many human bones of a large size, & several Sculls
in some of them" - The ground where these stone Coffins
were found was a little raised, with a mixture of small
stones and earth, in the form of a barrow or tumulus."
