002.05 | A very extensive cemetery belonging to and situated a short distance west from the town of Greenock, It was formed in 1846 at an expense of about £3,000. The grounds are nearly surrounded on every side by a high stone wall and the numerous carriage drives and walks are laid off with great taste, There are a great number of very neat monuments, The largest - and a very elegant one - is placed near the centre of the grounds, in memory of Walter Baine M.P. [Member of Parliament] For the burgh a number of years since, Stones are also being collected from all parts of the world to erect a monument to James Watt of Steam Engine celebrity. The site selected is on the highest part near the northern end of the grounds, - at the west end of the Esplanade is the burial place of Robert Wallace of Kelly formerly member of parliament for the burgh, A small portion of the grounds near the office is consecrated and set apart as a burying place for members of the English Ch. [Church] |
