[Statistical Account] Fullarton's Gazetteer Oliver and Boyd's Almanack Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] Johnston's Co. [County] Map Valn. [Valuation] Roll of County [Situation] In the extreme east side of the Co. [County] Perth. A parish in the extreme east of Perthshire and stretching in a narrow oblong southeastward from the Sidlaw hills to the Frith of Tay. It is bounded on its N.W. [North West] end by Forfarshire, along its NE [North East] side by Fowlis Wester and by Forfarshire, on its SE [South East] end by the Firth of Tay, and along its S.W. [South West] side by Inchture, Abernyte and Cargill. Its greatest length is about 7 miles and its greatest breadth about 3, but it contracts so much in some places to a very inconsiderable breadth. This parish presents great inequality of soil as well as of surface. From the bold and rocky point of Kingoodie a gently sloping bank commences and stretches in a north-westerly direction diverging farther and farther from the Firth as it advances till it ends somewhat abruptly at the Snabs of Drummie. The low grounds lying to the south of it and between it and the firth are as flat almost as a bowling-green and the heaviest crops of grain are raised upon them, in other parts the soil is well adapted for potatoe and turnip husbandry. The parish forms the eastern extremity of the Carse of Gowrie and the whole of it excepting one farm lies to the south of the Sidlaw range. Longforgan is in the presbytery of Dundee and Synod of Angus and Mearns. Patron the Crown. There are no detached portions of Longforgan nor are there any detached portions of other parishes within it except a very small Detached part of Caputh about ¼ mile east of Milnfield

OS1/25/52/26 FORT (Remains of) [Dron Hill] Camp (Supposed Roman) Camp (Supposed Roman) Camp Mr. John McLaren, Millhill Mr. Alexander Forbes Dron Stobies Co. [County] Map 075 [Situation] On the Summit of Dron Hill. This camp from its shape* is supposed of Roman construction, it is situated on the highest point of Dron Hill, and is composed of three Banks on the south, and two on the north side built of rough stones and earth. The hill of Dron is now planted with wood and all traces of this camp will soon be entirely obliterated.
OS1/25/52/26 [Page] 26 Ph. [Parish] of Longforgan -- Sheet 75 No 16 Trace 5. Note. From the shape, situation, and construction of the above, it is apparently a British hill fort, and to be written on plan as usual Fort (Remains of) in Old English. At about three miles distance and upon the top of the hill of Dron is the remains of a fortification which appears to have been built of rude stones and turf. It is roundish or rather oval, following the shape of the hill and a space of about two Scotch acres towards the south it has three retrenchments or banquettes rising above another as the hill ascends. It is now planted and will very soon be totally obliterated. This with another something of the same kind in the adjoining parish of Abernyte and that on Dunsinnan hill might have been part of a chain running diagonally across that range of hills from the Carse to Strathmore. These, from their shape must either have been Danish or Scottish, most probably the latter as they present a face to the point of invasion. Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] vol. [volume] 19 page 561. *Note:- That this fort or camp is Roman could not by any [means?] be inferred from its "Shape" or situation [Initialled] J.C.

OS1/25/52/27 [Page] 27 Parish of Longforgan -- Sheet 75 No 16. Trace 6. [Note to Chapel:] At Dron on the high ground above the village there are still to be seen the ruins of a Chapel which belonged to the Abbey of Cupar-Angus erected in 1164 by Malcolm IV. The grandson and Successor of David I. for a Community of Cistercian monks. Its north and south walls have long since fallen down or been demolished and only the gables remain and these in rather a dilapidated state. In the west one there is a large window terminating in a beautiful pointed arch, which springs from a pilaster on either side. It is situated in a dell through which a rivulet flows and at the foot of the rocky eminence on which it stands there is a fountain of the purest and most limpid water on which the severest drought makes scarcely any impression and which would doubtless be rendered available in the days of Roman Catholic superstition. Though it is now very [old], a nearly direct route from it to the Abbey still remains open. New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Perthshire page 408

The Ruins is surrounded by a Graveyard which is still used as a Burial Ground.
OS1/25/52/51 [Page] 51 Parish of Liff & Benvie Co. [County] Perth -- Sheet 88 No. 3 Trace 4 [Additional note:] Invergourie as a place of Christian worship is of remote antiquity and perhaps the most ancient on this side the Tay. The first Church was built by Boniface a legate or missionary, on his landing there with some attendants from Rome during the 7th Century. The same person proceeding into the interior parts of Angus founded other Churches. The walls of the Church of Invergowrie used in latter times are still very entire, but they indicate no superior antiquity or workmanship and are probably those of a fabric less ancient than the first. The churchyard is on an eminence of a singular shape which on one side is often washed by the Tay: and some people from the variety mould dug up have conjectured that the whole or greater part of this eminence may have been composed of forced earth. Old Stat. Acct [Statistical Account] vol. [volume] 13 p. [page] 117 Church of Invergowrie. - Under this head must lie noticed the remains of the Church of Invergowrie believed to be the most ancient place of worship to the north of the Tay. The walls, however, which are standing and are very entire are of the plainest masonry and bear no marks of antiquity. They cannot possibly have belonged to the first edifice erected by Boniface a legate or missionary, who landed at that place from Rome during the 7th. century. On this point reference is made in the former account to Boeth. Hist. [Boethius's History] Archbishop Spottiswood and Forbes on Tithes. The space inclosed within the walls of the church has been for generations been appropriated as the burying place of the families of Ingowrie and Mylnefield. The Church-yard is often washed by the Tay. New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Forfarshire pp. [pages] 581-2

OS1/25/52/57 [Page] 57 Parish of Longforgan -- Sheet 88 No. 5 [Castle Huntly extract:] The objects antiquity mentioned in the last Statistical Account need not again be enumerated or described but any account of this parish which did not embrace a particular notice of Castle Huntly, by far the most remarkable building in it would be unsatisfactory and incomplete. It is the seat of George Paterson Esqr. and there are few nobler specimens of an baronial residence to be with in Scotland. The time of its erection is not known with certainty, but there can be no doubt that it must have been very soon after the middle of the fifteenth century. It has this already resisted the storms of nearly 400 years and the strength of its foundation and the massiness and almost impenetrable soli- dity of its walls, seems to justify the belief, that, if it is not overthrown by some convulsion of nature it may stand for several hundred years more. It was built by the second Lord Gray of Fowlis who had very extensive possessions in the Carse of Gowrie, and the tradition is that he named it after his lady a daughter of the Earl of Huntly. The Castle with the fine estate belonging to it was sold to the Earl of Strathmore in 1615 but it did not become Castle Lyon till 1672 when in virtue of a charter obtained from Charles II. the barony of Longforgan was erected into a Lordship to be called the Lordship of Lyon a name which it retained till 1777 when it purchased by the late Mr. Paterson, the father of the present proprietor who having married a daughter of Lord Gray, the descendant of the founder very naturally restored its first name of Castle Huntly. Large additions in remarkably good keeping with the original edifice were made to it by that gentleman which had the effect not only of improving its appearance but also of greatly increasing its accommodation. Its situation is a striking one, on a rock rising almost perpendicularly out of the surrounding plain and scarcely accessible except on the NE [North East] side from which quarter the approach to it is conducted. It is built of Kingoody Stone which notwithstanding the long period that has elapsed can hardly be said to have sustained injury or to exhibit the smallest symtoms of decay. Its walls are not less than ten feet thick while they are as compact and as firmly cemented as the basis that supports them and the height of the round tower above the ground id 116 feet. The view from the top is much [continued on page 58]
OS1/25/52/58 [Page] 58 [Castle Huntly extract (continued)] [continued from page 57] and deservedly admired. There are many views certainly in other parts of Scotland of which the character is grander or more picturesque and there are points from which the eye may wander over a much wider tract of hill and dale and of mountain and wild, but there are few spots of such moderate elevation from which you can look down on a richer and more beautiful scene than from the battlements of Castle Huntly, &c.
