[Dictionary] 018 in the County of Selkirk, it is couterminous at all other points with the Parish of Yarrow & County of Selkirk The surface of the Parish is mountainous & steep with the exception of narrow strips of level holm - seldom exceeding two fields in breadth along the banks of the Tweed and Quair. - A considerable extent of land is, notwithstanding under judicious cultivation along the slopes of the hills, yielding good crops of the ordinary cereals, as well as turnips and other green crops. OS1/24/40/3 TRAQUAIR 018 is, in general, light and stony; while the holm land is composed of a deep deposit of alluvium - Several unsuccessful attempts have, at various times, been made for lead or other ores. Specimens of galena are said to have been found in the Channel of one of the Tributaries of the Quair & above the Village of Bold at which latter place "a feeble attempt was made in 1775, to sink a lead mine " (Statist. [Statistical] Acct [Account] XXI-52). - A Slate Quarry of an inferior description was formerly worked to a considerable extent at Grieston, on the North-western confines of this division of the Parish; but the superior quality of the Slate at Stobo and the increased facilities for importing Welsh & other Slates have greatly diminished the local advantages of Grieston. The outline of the Parish is very irregular. Its greatest length from the Tweed Southwards is about 6 Miles but the Parish of Yarrow protrudes beyond the Church of Traquair, through the Centre of the Parish to within 1¾ Mile of the Tweed, while at the Farm of Bold, Yarrow approaches to within 200 yards of the Tweed - nearly detaching the extensive farms of Juniper Bank & Bold from the Main body of the Parish.- The Church of Traquair was granted by David I to the Bishop of Glasgow. It was dedicated to St Brigid : & was commonly called St Bride's

OS1/24/40/4 TRAQUAIR 018 St Bride's Kirk, or Kirkbride. In Bagimont's Roll, there are the Rectoria de Kirkbride, valued at £5.6.8; & the vicaria de Kirkbride at £2.13.4, lying without the church of Glasgow & Deanry of Peebles - After the Reformation the advowson went to the Crown with which it still remains, The present church was built in 1785, - (vide Chalmers Caledonia). - The part of the Parish of Kailzie or Hope Kailzie lying south of the Tweed was annexed to Traquair in 1674. - Traquair appears to have been a distinct Sheriffwick & Bailiewick. In the Newbatle Charter, 30. Simon the son of MacBeth is styled "Vicecomes de Travequeyr" in 1184. (Chalmers Caledonia) - The two Sheriffships of Traquair & Peebles appear to have been united about the beginning of the 14th Century. -

OS1/24/40/14 QUAIR WATER Quair Water This seems now the universal spelling but all the other graphical variations quoted in the general description of the Parish (Page 1) apply equally to the name of the Water 017 ; 018 [Situation] Flows into the Tweed abou 7½ Miles below Peebles. Quair Water is a considerable affluent of the Tweed - having its rise near Dunrig on the N.E. [North East] slope of the mountain range separating the vallies of the Tweed and Yarrow - & passing through the Glen & about 200 yards west of Traquair Church discharges itself into the Tweed immediately below Traquair House. - In addition to the temporary bridges thrown across for the accomodation of the sheep in the higher parts of its course, it is spanned by three stone bridges of one arch each.

OS1/24/40/27 TRAQUAIR CHURCH AND MANSE Traquair Church and Manse The invariable name 018 [Situation] about 8¾ Miles from Peebles, on the west side of the road leading from Inverleithen to Yarrow. The present Church was built in 1788. It is a plain structure substantially built with a Belfry at the S. end, and capable of accommodating half the population of the Parish; but those inhabiting the detached portion of the Parish worship at Peebles which is more convenient in point of distance - all the seats are free. - There is an external flight of steps leading up to a gallery at the North end. This gallery as well as the body of the Church is comfortably but plainly seated. There is no other public place of Worship in the Parish & those of the Parishioners who dissent from the Established Church find their way to their respective places of Worship at the Village of Inverleithen. - The Manse (with a suite of offices; a well cultivated Garden, & a glebe of about 12 acres of arable land attached to it) was built in 1793-4 & extended in 1814. - (Statistical Acct.
