These seem to have been composed of at least two circular mounds, four or five feet high, with a sunk ditch between the outer and inner circle. Such were the rude enclosures in which a simple people took refuge with their goods during the Roman invasion Specimens of British Camps are to be seen on Caidmuir hill near Peebles, and on Caer Lee (Curley) hill near Inverleithen |

[Inverleithen Well]
This well is Composed or supplied with three springs two of which
were discovered and analysed many years ago the third one was discovered
about two years the analyses of which was not yet published The analysis
made by Dr [Doctor] Fyfe of the two first is as follows. -- "First stream 36 grains
viz [videlicet] Carbonate of Magnesia 5.3 muriate of lime 9.5 muriate of Soda
21.2 = 36. -- Second Stream 60.6 grains Viz [videlicet] Carbonate of Magnesia 10.2 muriate
of lime 19.4 muriate of Soda 31. = 60.6. The large quantity of Carbonate of
Magnesia (Seven parts in 10,000 of water) renders it probable that, it must
contain a quantity of Carbonic acid sufficient to Constitute an acidulous Spring
in order to be Capable of holding the earth in solution". -- New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account]
Thus it would appear that the two springs already analysed are
Saline but the attendants at the well say that the last stream
discovered and lately analysed is a sulphureous Spring |

No trace of these now remain excepting at the Summit where there is one Circular bank with two quarter circles at the South end. The wood has partly destroyed what remains of the Camp - but the trees have lately been cut away in its centre - |

"Porras-hill or Purves hill is a farm-Steading placed on a rising ground where a number
of remarkable terraces descend to near the level of the river about 200 yards long. The present
road occupies the line of the lowest but one of these, three rise above it all about
18 feet broad. There is then a larger interval between the terraces as if the upper
series of them had been intended to be Separated from the lower but this Space
is not regular for it is much wider at the one end than the other, above this there
are other three terraces approaching towards the brow of the declivity on which they have
been formed but none of them so parallel as those below. We abstain from offering any
Conjecture as to the purposes of these works." -- New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Peebleshire page 30
