Five green mounds, situated on the south of "Markstone Moss" and east of the county road leading from St Mary's to Kirkwall. There is no tradition in the locality in connections with these mounds; and, judging from the appearance of the two that have been explored, they seem to have been originally gravel heaps. |

Graemeshall There are three mounds in this parish namely "Green Knowe", "Laughton's Knowe" and the " Wart of Paplay". They occupy commanding positions and can be seen one from another: and it is the opinion of some inhabitants that fires were lighted on these places to give warning of the approach of athletes from "Scotland" who frequently amused themselves "lifting" Orcadian cattle. There is nothing reliable on the subject owing probably to the absence of Reporters from those "Highland Games" |
