088 An extensive ruin, the ancient residence of the Earls & Bishops of Orkney, situated on a green near the sea, and immediately north east of the ''Parish Church.'' The time of its erection is not known with certainty. It is said. that additions have been made to it at different times, by the Sinclairs. commonly styled Princes & Counts of Orkney.
''Robert Stuart,'' natural brother to Queen Mary as also his son Patrick made great additions: but now only the bare walls remain. It was built upon the model of Holyroodhouse, a hollow quadrangle measuring 158 by 100 feet with a well in the centre indicated by a circular sunk stone wall, The Property of The Earl of Zetland,
