[Situation] South Side of Princes Street in East Princes Street Garden
A handsome monument consisting of a Gothic structure of the florid style. The lower [part] of this Structure is a Gothic [aisle] or arch, beneath this arch is a [---] platform approached by stone [steps] on which is placed a statue of [Sir] W. Scott in a sitting posture [with] a dog by his side. The aisle or [---] is a sort of vaulted roof [---] with groinings and a pendent in the [---] above the aisle arise a Spire the most elegant &. elaborate [---] &. 200 feet, ornamented with richly carved niches, Statues, pinnacles, buttreses &c., much of this detail being copied from Melrose [Abbey] It was founded in1840 and inaugurated in 1846 and cost £16000. It is a design of Mr. G. M. Kemp an [architect] who was hitherto scarcely known to the [public] and who was drowned during the time of its [erection] by falling into the Union Canal.
