[Situation] In the centre of St Andrew's Square This monument is, a handsome fluted column 136 feet high including the pedestal erected in 1821 to the memory of Lord Melville first Lord of the Admiralty. This is surmounted by a colossal statue of his Lordship 14 feet high maKing the height altogether 150 ft. [feet] It is a copy from Tragan's Pillar at Rome The erection of it cost £8000 which was principally contributed by gentlemen connected with the Navy. |
