Map of City
A large and handsome building after a plan by the celebrated Architect Robert Adam. It forms a square of 200 feet on each side, and contains about a hundered [sic] apartments. In the interior of the square is a circular building surmounted with a dome about 50 feet in diameter and 80 in height & containing a marble statue of George 111, and at each angle is a small square turret, those in front showing the time and direction of the wind. In the centre of the front there is a projection of three windows in breadth and 4 corinthian pilasters supporting a pediment within which are the Arms of great Britain, and at each extremity there is another projection with a venetian window, and on the top a stone balustrade. In the interior are deposited all state papers, copies of title deeds of property, contracts Mortgages, documents made use of in actions before the court of sessions etc. It also contains a beautiful copy of the treaty of Union written on Vellum but none of the state papers are of a remote period, as the public archives od Scotland were destroyed by Edward 1 of England and also by Cromwell. A stone Screen runs in front of this building and on a platform in the centre, is to be erected an equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington.
