A good plain education is given to both sexes. The girls are exercised in the domestic duties of the house to train them for servants.

The expense for the building and endowment of the hospital was bequeathed by Daniel Stewart Esqr. a native of Perth who died in Edinburgh in 1812 and the money so bequeathed having increased in 1847 to £100,000 the building was then commenced and is now nearly completed.

OS1/11/90/15 PATRIOTIC SOCIETY'S ALLOTMENT GARDENS Patriotic Society's Allotment Gardens Sign Board in Garden James Galbraith Dean William Cuthbertson Dean Cemetery A large extent of ground let in Small plots as gardens It was established about 1847 by a Society composed of several gentlemen about Edinburgh with the view to afford to Artisans, Mechanics, and others the opportunity of cultivating a small garden to afford them useful employment during their unemployed hours and also the opportunity of wholesome and at the same time profitable exercise it is held by lease by the above Society who lets it in small lots at the rate of £10 per acre. If the rents raised from these lots does meet the expenses of the Society the deficiency is made up by a subscription great numbers of Mechanics and others have availed themselves of the advantages this afforded.

This institution owes its origin to Andrew Gardener merchant in Edinburgh who was treasurer to the Trinity Hospital having collected by Subscription £218 a house was hired in 1773 & 20 children admitted after which it has progressed to its present state.
