[Situation] About 24 chs. [chains] E. by N. [East by North] from North Leith Church.
An irregular square and a row of houses erected on the site of the Citadel and the ancient church and burying ground of St. Nicholas. The Square contains the Railway Station and Several Taverns and Hotels: the Row is chiefly private dwellings and Shops. Of the ancient Church dedicated to St. Nicholas, no vestige now remains, all traces having been removed at the construction of the Citadel by General Monk, during the occupation of Leith, by the Army of the Protector, The Citadel was of a Pentagon form and consisted of 5 bastions, with one Principal gate, which still exists, fronting the last. Fragments of the outer wall may still be seen, and a portion about 20 yards in length, and in good Preservation, extends eastwards from the Gateway. Starting from the Gateway, which at the time the Citadel was constructed, would be close upon the sea, the wall ran fro a short way
