[Situation] About 2 miles N. [North] of Edinburgh & 1 mile West of North Leith A considerable fishing village on the Southern shore of the Firth of Forth it is almost wholly occupied by fishermen and their families. it has some good Inns, and a few shops, an established Church, a Free Church, and a School, it has few streets these being Maitland Place, Main Street, and Pier Place. from the eastern end of the lastnamed the Newhaven Chain Pier extends out in a Northerly direction.(see description) The inhabitants of this like most of the fishing villages on the East of Scotland are a peculiar race, their habits of life and occupations lending to keep them separate from the Mass of the population, they rarely intermarry with other families and thus they preserve a peculiar caste of countenance and physical constitution; they have the character of being pro-eminent over others of the same calling for their sober, industrious, and peaceable habits.
