[North] Esk, 9 Miles South of Edinburgh. it is a burgh of barony and the ground fues belong to Sir George Clerk Bart [Baronet] of Penicuik House. it contains about 1000 inhabitants all of whom are in someway supported by the extensive Paper Mills of Charles Cowan Esq M.M. it has 3 churches of different denominations the same number of schools, a Savings Bank, Post Office, and two annual fairs for hiring of servants. The village is steadily increasing in prosperity and extent.
