A range of lofty hills or mountains running from the borders of Lanark & Peebles shires into Midlothian in a north easterly direction as far as Lasswade Parish where they terminate upon the farm of Hill-end. the surface in general is smooth heathy and grassy pasturage excellent for rearing of sheep . its geology is neither curious nor valuable presenting but specimens of Rotten Whinstone and in some places Granite almost all the hills which form this chain have distinct and Separate names. Carnerthy near the eastern extremity is the highest and best known. the range figures conspicuously in Scottish history Wallace having Traversed them often both as a fugitive and a conqueror. |
