This place is rendered interesting as having been the seat of Drummond the poet who was born here in 1585 & died in 1649, in front of the house still stands the tree under which it is said he was seated when Ben Jonson arrived on a visit to him from London. This building like most of the ancient Scottish Mansions consists of a square vaulted tower with walls of immense thickness. The gate of entrance is of more modern erection than the tower though probably older than the new dwelling house At what period or by whom the tower was erected is uncertain. Passing thro' [through] the doorway over which are still the Armorial bearings of the Drummond family we enter the Courtyard occupied on one side by the modern part of the building and on the other are the remains of the ancient tower, in the centre of the Court Yard is a deep well which formerly served as an entrance to the caves as also a Draw well which supplied the inmates of the Castle with water In the house are shown an ancient large two handed broad sword & a cane said to have belonged to Robert the Bruce, a dress worn by |

[Description continued] Prince Charles Edward Stuart during his campaign in 1745 and a pair of Antique shoes and a silk dress of Annabella Drummond, Queen of Robert the 3rd one of the branches of this ancient family. Under the Mansion several curious caves have been cut from the rock. The entrance is by a door on the south side which leads to The Kings Gallery. The first cave is called the Kings Bedchamber, further on is the Well already mentioned, ascending a few steps is an apartment denominated the Kings Guard Room, and on the opposite side is the King Dining Room - The above is an Abridged Ext [Extract] from McDowall's "New Guide to Roslin & Hawthornden". See Form 136 page The modern building is a plain two story [storey] Mansion House the property & residence of Sir James Walker Drummond Bart. [Baronet] of Hawthornden. "In the upper storey of the building there is now growing a Sycamore tree of a considerable size". Gross's Antiquities. "At Hawthornden there remains a fragment of an old fortalice or Castle of unknown antiquity. There is still an arch over the only one of the rooms now in existence and on it there is a sycamore or plane tree of considerable dimensions" New Stat. Acct [Statistical Account] vol. [volume] 1 p. 012 |
[Situation] About 1/2 mile north of Roslin village.
The site of a battle which was fought near Roslin abou [about] the year 1302-3. It is said that the English Army consisting of about 30,000 men was divided into 3 divisions when one of these divisions was suddenly attacked by about 8000 Scotch & vanquished after which a 2nd division of the English came to the charge & was also vanquished and the 3rd division also came to the charge & was vanished [vanquished ?]. Thus three battles being fought in one in which 8000 Scotch conquered three armies each of which was superior in number. This is the account given by the Scotch historians. Every research was made in the locality concerning the sites of these three engagements but nothing satis factory could be obtained except some made [--] connected with the objects named mountmailing The Hewing, Stinking Rig, Shinbanes Fiel [Field] See Descriptive Remarks of these. "When the peace ended, at the beginning of the year 1303 Edward sent a fresh army into Scotland under the Command of John de Segrave. The English advanced towards Edinburgh in three divisions. The first had scarcely approached to Roslin on the 24th of February 1302-3 under the conduct of Segrave when it was attacked by some chosen bands under Cumin the guardian and Simon Fraser of Tweedale. Segrave was discomfited and wounded. His second division which advanced to support hi only shared his misfortune and the third also advancing a sharp conflict ensued with very doubtful success. The events of this day are blazoned by the historians of the one nation and thrown into shade by the annalists of the other" See Chalmers Caledonia vol [volume] ll [2] page 588. |

[Yard] of Roslin is a copious spring of excellent water called "St Matthews Well" This Well is situated much below the level of the village of Roslin but by means of a force pump it is made to supply the village of Roslin & neighbourhood with water. From its name & proximity to the Ancient Chapel & Grave Yd. [Yard] of Roslin one would suppose it to be what is termed holy Well where pilgrimages may have been performed. It will also be remembered that the ancient Chapel is dedicated to St. Matthew the Apostle |

A very remarkable rock, the top of which overhangs a walk leading from Hawthornden along the wooded cliff of the River North Eask In looking at it from Hawthornden or from a point north of the rock itself, it has some resemblance to a pulpit from the way in which the top of the rock projects over the base. It is mentioned by some persons in the country that John Knox was in the habit of preaching from this rock to the people below and on the opposite side of the river This rock is situated a little north of Hawthornden |

A remarkable piece of table land which is almost surrounded by the river North Esk. There is no tradition in the country that a Castle ever stood here, and from a close inspection of the ground, there is not the slightest trace or evidence of the remains of a building to be seen. How it got this name is a mystery. It is situated about 1/2 mile north of Hawthornden |

A large cool recess or grotto with stone benches, excavated from a freestone rock and situated about 3 chains north of the front of Hawsthornden (house) and at the top of a high precipitous bank which overhangs the River North Esk. To enter this recess the visitor has to descend several stone steps, which would appear at first sight to be dangerous from the steepness of the bank on the left (see sketch on margin of trace) This Grotto, in which it is said Drummond composed many of his poems, is called in one account of Hawthornden the "Cypress Grotto" and in Mr. Dowalls "Guide to Roslin" the "Cypress Grove", but the people of Roslin, Hawthornden &c call it "Poet Drummond's Seat, indeed it is the popular name in the County. and is not known by any other. |

This small ancient fortalice crowns the lofty projecting summit of a rugged rock. overhanging the River North Esk, about one mile (East North East) from the village of Roslin. This place is rendered interesting as having been the seat of Drummond the poet & historian, (born here in 1585 and died in 1649) who did much for the improvement and protection of the building, In front of the house stands a tree of immense size, under which it is said Drummond the poet was sitting when Ben Johnson (a celebrated English poet) arrived upon a visit from London to him. This building like most of the ancient Scottish Mansions consists of a square vaulted tower with walls of immense thickness calculated to serve as an asylum or temporary retreat from the depradation of civil insurrections or foreign invasions, On the upper story of which a sycamore tree of considerable size is now shooting forth its branches The gate of entrance is of more modern erection than the tower tho' probably older than the new dwelling house, At what period or by whom the tower was erected is uncertain, the first mention of it on record is in a charter of the year 1433 but in all probability it is of much older date, Passing through this doorway over which are still the Armorial bearings the Drummond family we enter the court yard occupied on one side by the modern part of the building, and on the other, are the remains of the ancient tower. In the centre of the court yard is a deep well, which formerly served as an entrance to the caverns below. In the interior of the house are shown an ancient large two handed broad sword, & cane said to have belonged to Robert the Bruce a dress worn by Prince Charles Stuart during his Scottish campaign in 1745, and a pair of antique shoes & a silk dress of Annabella Drummond Queen of Robert the 3d. one of the former branches of this ancient family From the windows the prospect is rendered uncommonly pleasing by the finely wooded cliffs and the sound of the murmuring stream rushing through the deep rocky glen below. Under the mansion several curious caves have been scoped out of the solid rock |

A variety of conflicting legends exist respecting them. Some attribute them to the work of the Picts and demoninate them the King of Pictlands Castle or Palace, others suppose them to have been formed as receptacles for robbers. The most probable opinion however is that they were designed as places of security to the proprietor, during the destructive wars between the Scotch & English, in the 13th & 14th centuries. In these caverns Sir Alexander Ramsay used to conceal himself and here he was joined by the young warriors of his day who were proud to be recd. [received] into the band. The entrance to these caves is by a door on the south side by which visitors descend a few steps and pass along a narrow passage called the Kings Gallery 75 feet long and 6 broad. The first cave on the left descended to by two steps is denominated the Kings Bed Chamber, Further on is the well already noticed in the centre of the court above, Proceeding a little & ascending a few steps is an apartment with about 200 square apertures, curiously cut out all around called the Kings Guard Room On the opposite side of the passage is another apartment known by the name of the Kings Dining Room, Here visitors sometimes insert their names in a book kept for the purpose. The above description copied from McDowall's "New Guide to Roslin & Hawthornden" The more modern building is a plain but substantial & comfortable house. it is two stories high built with stone & slated. It is the residence & property of Sir James Walker Drummond Bart. [Baronet] There are several delightful walks through the woods (of Hawthornden) are tastefully & ingeniously laid out, and a little to the (N.E) [North East] of the house is a fine fruit & vegetable garden. |

This cave or rather caves, are situated in front of a high rock on the east bank of the River North Esk. They are excavations in the solid rock, and are entered by a small door They consist of four apartments in the shape of a cross. This place is situated about 1/2 mile east of the village of Roslin & nearly the same distance S.W [South West] of Hawthornden from which place there is a picturesque walk on the top of a wooded cliff, which rises immediately from the river below. In a note to a "Guide Book" entitled "Account Historical & Descriptive of Roslin Chapel & Castle. Hawthornden &c" Is the following regarding these caves - These caves gave shelter to the adventurous band of gallant patriots under the heroic Sir Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie when the English were in possession of Edinburgh in the reign of David the 2nd. It is melancholy to reflect that this great warrior was barbarously murdered by Douglas, the dark Knight of Liddesdale, who seized him whilst filling the office of Sheriff of Teviotdale, and dispensing justice at Hawick in 1342 Note - In some published accounts, these caves are called "Gorton Caves" ad sometimes the "Caves of Gorton" The reason no doubt that they are called so in those published accounts is, that the farmhouse called Gorton House is close by - But the popular name in [the] country is Wallace's Cave. |
