WALLACE'S CAVES Wallace's Cave (German text) Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Brown Free Church Manse Roslin
Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Stirling Roslin
Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Anderson Loanhead
012 This cave or rather caves, are situated in front of a high rock on the east bank of the River North Esk. They are excavations in the solid rock, and are entered by a small door They consist of four apartments in the shape of a cross. This place is situated about 1/2 mile east of the village of Roslin & nearly the same distance S.W [South West] of Hawthornden from which place there is a picturesque walk on the top of a wooded cliff, which rises immediately from the river below. In a note to a "Guide Book" entitled "Account Historical & Descriptive of Roslin Chapel & Castle. Hawthornden &c" Is the following regarding these caves - These caves gave shelter to the adventurous band of gallant patriots under the heroic Sir Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie when the English were in possession of Edinburgh in the reign of David the 2nd. It is melancholy to reflect that this great warrior was barbarously murdered by Douglas, the dark Knight of Liddesdale, who seized him whilst filling the office of Sheriff of Teviotdale, and dispensing justice at Hawick in 1342 Note - In some published accounts, these caves are called "Gorton Caves" ad sometimes the "Caves of Gorton" The reason no doubt that they are called so in those published accounts is, that the farmhouse called Gorton House is close by - But the popular name in [the] country is Wallace's Cave.
