This place is supposed to [be] the site of some great conflict or battle in ancient times. The remains found here are such as indicate the site of a battle [by] the standing stone called Caiy Stone on Caiyside. large cairns which have been some years ago [removed] also the stone coffins found from time to time and the camp which was demolished some years ago. all seem plainly to indicate the site of battle but evidently of a very remote age. |

"On the lands of Comiston once stood the remains of a large encampment. Adjacent to this camp and near the house of Fairmilehead an extensive and important battle had been fought and two very large conical cairns erected, on demolishing which for the purpose of making the turnpike road remains of human bones were found in them and several fragments of old arms were found in them two of which are still in the possession of Mrs Trotter of Mortonhall, the proprietor of the ground not far from these cairns there had been erected an upright pillar stone which still remains. It is a wide mossy black of whinstone of a flat shape nine feet above the surface of the ground and four feet below it. This called the Kel Stane an old British word signifying the battle stone." This is the site of an ancient Fort or Camp situated on the hill called Caiyside . It has been levelled long since for the purpose of Cultivation. In White's History of Liberton It is stated "N.W. [North West] from Morton House is a rampart of a circular or rather oval form intersected by the turnpike road. It is entire on the northern side but not so on the south." The historian further states, that it is his opinion that it is not a Roman camp on account of its shape but rather a Roman town or colony. All the intelligent inhabitants agree in opinion that it was a Roman Camp or defence around a town. From its continguity to the Roman Road it is almost certain that it was a work of the Romans. |

A parish in the County of Edinburgh bounded on the north by Colinton and Liberton on the N. E.by Dalkeith and Newbattle on the east by Cockpen and Carrington on the south by Penicuik and Glencorse. The southern part of the parish of Lasswade was erected in 1835 into the Quoad Sacra parish of Roslin.
In the locality, the name of the parish of Lasswade is popularly said to have originated in the circumstance of a lass doing the service of a ferry boat and wading across the river with travellers, but with better reasoning is derived by Chalmers from the Anglo-Saxon Laeswe and the old English weyde meaning jointly a well watered pasture of common use and not obscurely descriptive of site of the village. |

Length & breadth 100 feet and 60 it is situated convenient to the mansion house, and from curiosity Mr Trotter the proprietor had the interior of this artificial mound excavated and fitted up as an ice house in the meantime being in hope of finding something to substantiate it's doubted name, but alas nothing was found, but from a recent visit of a party of the Antiquarian Society gives their decision in favour of it's being a Roman Antiquity known by the above name, there is another thing to certify that the Romans had some connection with this neighbourhood and which Mr Trotter has under his care, is a large stone and copper axe which undoubted is of Roman manufacture |

An arable hill situate on the farm of Morton Mains from its summit the eye embraces an extensive view to the south, while on the north it is intercepted by the Braid Hills. To the base of which it forms a gentle decline, it was well adapted for the scenes of past days and it was principally on this side that the greatest body of Cromwells forces were encamped in 1650,though nothing remains to mark the exact spot, still tradition gives it the Galachlaw being the principal part of the Cautonment it is a common tale also, that this hill was the scene of executions during Cromwells stay which gave rise to the name Gallows Law but this is rather too fictitious and modern to be relied on though it is pronounced at the present day the same, the proper derivation is of Gaelic origin according to the most enlightened authorities. |

The site of two ancient cairns on the farm of Swanston, those cairns no doubt at some remote period were a remarkable size. from the description given of the [] quantity of stones removed there from: and at some former period during these excavation human remains were found, together with some arms. I may remark also that at some long remote period a Roman encampment was established somewhere in this neighbourhood, but the oldest residenters will have it that it was the S.W. [South West] side of Gallachlaw both of which are excellent situations for the like but in the meantime of the whole information, not one can point out near were it was situated though there is not the least doubt but it was either on the Gallachlaw or Keyside.
There is a remarkable standing stone situated in a belt of Plantation on the estate of Mortonhall the tradition of which remains in obscurity, it is of a cylindrical form all on standing about 3 ft above the ground, it stands about ¼ of a mile at the S.E. [South East] Base of Gallachlaw In connection with the above Roman antiquities there was formerly a Roman Road passed on the North side of Keyside where lately an [] quantity of stones were taken from, also a supposed tracing of it was found to the north side of two small clumps of wood on the farm of Buckstane on the East side of the Public Road in what [] direction - else remains in obscurity (see Transactions of the Antiquarian Society) |

The most extensive lime stone quarries situated in the South of Scotland; they extend from east to west above 1 mile in length. with other detached portions of a perdigious size and were worked from time immemorial ; sufficient proof of that is given from the immense excavations that have been made forming one line of areas supported by rustic pillars hewn out of the lime stone rock and dipping at an angle of 25°. however of late they have not been worked; being found hardly sufficient for paying the working of them; the only one in progress is that of Burdiehouse. they are the property of Sir David Baird. |

A large and important village situated on the summit of a rising ground 3½ miles South of Edinburgh on the Dalkeith Road Its shape is somewhat like that of the letter T built with no system of regularity, the principal body of the houses are one story high, thatched and in very indifferent repair, which no doubt served ample accomodation to many individuals employed at the coal mines, and other detached manufactories: at present numbers are left tenantless owing to the great standstill of the coal works, which have obliged the inmates to seek employment elsewhere the principal depot of the Coal Destrict is on the South side of the village: this village has a plentiful supply of water from Burdiehouse Burn and which is raised to the height of 70 ft by means of force pumps it contains an Established Church "Quad Sacre" two schools, a Hall. and 4 public houses. and lastly a most singular Cave hewn out of the solid freestone Rock in 1794 by an excentric individual. named George Paterson a Blacksmith, who lived and worked for 15 years in it; it is situated at the North end of the village where it is entered by a hole 3 ft wide tangent to the foundation of a house. from which it runs in a westerly direction in the shape of a corridor to the distance of 50 ft with several irregular apartments branching of it with all the necessary furniture requisite for a household deportment, hewn out of the same material; |

The houses are erregular and scattered, thatched chiefly, and in bad repair. it contains a Free church and schools (see description under the head of) one public house. and a flour mill the latter of which is disused and almost in a ruinous state; the derivation of this name is most probably from Stonehouse or Stanehouse. it containsabout 30 families |

This name applies to a well dedicated to St Catherine from a supposed circumstance of St Catherine bringing a bottle of holy oil from Rome which however by accident was spilt here and which gave rise to this well it is allowed by Berce to have been the most famous in Scotland for working miracles: on its surface continually float a black oily substance similar to Tar which is supposed to arise from the great coal bed below; however it serves as an excellent medicine for individuals troubled with cutaneous diseases. it was held in high veneration by Catholics, who attributed so many miracles to be derived from it, and for which a body of nuns went in procession annually from Edinburgh; King James the 6th paid it a visit in 1517, and who ordered it to be surrounded with a building however at present it is covered with a neat little house about 6 ft square, under which a person formally descended by 24 circular steps, but from some neglect the water has covered them that not one is visible. |

John Allan Broomhill |
006 |
This name points out the site of were once stood the ancient Baronial residence of Broomhill, and according to tradition must have been some place of note, for it is represented as being a place of great strength surrounded by a moat, of some dept, and with little trouble surrounded by water in a moments notice, which would probably have been about 3 chains square and entered only by a draw-bridge on the N.E [North East] side: Mr Allan the present farmer of Broomhill cleared the last vestige of this "garrison" (a term which it is commonly known in the locality) about 30 years ago and from whom I had the knowledge of knowing where it stood, it was about 80 years ago occupied by a weaver it being then in a ruinous state, at that time the place was one sheet of water and considered unclaimable for agricultural interests, but however that assertion has become quite futile and it has turned out to be some of the richest in the parish, some short distance there was a stone ball found, which is in the house of Mr Trotter. the situation was anything but a commanding one, being situated in a swamp |

The name Belvedere is a french word which signifies "a place from which a person has an agreeable prospect"
This translation is well appropriated to the position on which this fabric stands from it the eye embraces the side of a very extensive county and not only did this place serve as a gratification to the sight to many of the french nobility who frequented this spot, but often was the scence of mirth and festivity; It is now almost in a ruinous state; though possessed of any apartment etc, save that of the windows it is about 22 ft square by 30 high, on the west side it is surmounted with two staircases terminating in a conical shape topped with a vane and built upon an earthen mound about 10ft elevated. I cannot ascertain the date of this place, but 2 believe it not to be more than [] |

This name applies to a parish situate 1 mile South of Edinburgh; its shape is very irregular, being 7 miles long while its breadth does not exceed 4. The etymology of this name is very obscure, but according to our best authority "Chambers" (author of the celebrated Caledonia) it seems to be from a Hospital which contained those afflicted with leprosy, hence the name leper-town, now "Liberton" |
