006 A scattered village situated on the banks of the Burdiehouse Burn and occupying a beautiful site thereon, so take it in a view from the south it possesses all the grandeur that nature could combine, its lofty banks and luxuriant moat mingled with the velvety water of the Burdiehouse burn which forms a contrast that would do justice to the pencil of the artist.
The houses are erregular and scattered, thatched chiefly, and in bad repair. it contains a Free church and schools (see description under the head of) one public house. and a flour mill the latter of which is disused and almost in a ruinous state; the derivation of this name is most probably from Stonehouse or Stanehouse. it containsabout 30 families
