006 This name applies to a parish situate 1 mile South of Edinburgh; its shape is very irregular, being 7 miles long while its breadth does not exceed 4. The etymology of this name is very obscure, but according to our best authority "Chambers" (author of the celebrated Caledonia) it seems to be from a Hospital which contained those afflicted with leprosy, hence the name leper-town, now "Liberton"
