the adjoining building to the East were used as the State apartments of the Unfortunate Mary Stuart after her return from France in 1561, the portion to the West was erected in 1661 by Sir John Gilmour the Lord President of the Court of Session, which is now in a State of Ruins, those buildings where erected in a manner as to form a rectangle, having four Towers. to the East of this is the Remains of a small chapel. formerly used as a Roman Catholic place of Worship. it is thatched and in good repair now used as a Stable. a little North West is the remains of an oblong building tradition assents that it was formerly used as a presbyterian place of worship during the indulgence granted by James the 6th. There is without the Castle the sites of several buildings which were inhabited no doubt by individuals at the South is an enclosure of about 9 acres formerly used as gardens in which is the remains of an old Pond which tradition asserts to be cut in the shape of the letter P from the initial of the Prestons, The oldest dates that can be descernable are two, one of 1427 and the other 1249 or 1549 most probable the latter
