[Situation] A little North of Morningside Church. A large stone of an irregular Shape built in a wall on the East of the road leading to Burghmuirhead through Morningside. One side only of it is to be seen the other sides being enclosed in the wall Owing to its being thus situated one cannot judge of it dimension A tradition in the locality states King James IV. planted his standard in a hole in this stone at the time that he reviewed his troops on the Boroughmuir previous to the Battle of Flodden Field. There is also another story told that the "proprietor of the Lands of Pennicuik is obliged whenever the King comes into the neighbourhood of Edinburgh to receive his majesty at the Hare Stone now erected in the Park wall almost opposite to the south eastern corner of the Park dike at the end of Tipperlinn Lone near the Borough Moor Head and standing thereon give three blasts on a horn whereby is held certain privileges belonging to the estate of Penicuik" See Maitlands Hist.
