[Situation] 17 Chains SW by S. [South West by South] of St. Davids Church.
An extensive and well ConStructed building built of white Sandstone part of it is 3 & part 4 Stories high, It is at present unoccupied. It was built for the purpose of a Silk manufactory & occupied as such until lately, It was fitted up with all the necessary machinery &c. these fixtures are now nearly all taken away and the building is now almost quite empty.

[Situation] Leading in a S. [South] westerly direction from the S W [South West] Side of the City of Edinburgh
This canal forms a communication between Edinburgh & Glasgow by means of Water carriage; It extends from the basin, Port Hopeton, at the end of Lothian Road to the Forth and Clyde Canal near the village of Camelon a distance of 31 1/2 miles after which the latter Canal becomes the means of Transit. The Union Canal is 5 feet deep 40 feet wide at the surface & 22 at the bottom It was commenced in 1818 & opened in 1822 the cost of construction was £400.000.
