[Situation] On the N. [North] Side of High St. at Nether Bow Port A large & handsome edifice erected 1852 well fitted up with pews galleries etc, The Style of Architecture is the early decorated Gothic The front is particularly of this style with a large &, handsome central window & ornamented with buttresses &, pinnacles & surmounted by a Cross. It was built by public Subscription for the use of the Free Church congregation of Canongate who hitherto used Dr. Bells School in Niddry St. as their church The minister is the Revd. [Reverend] Nisbet whose stipend is paid by the Sustentation fund. The church is Seated for about 900 of a congregation. The site for the church was purchased Sometime ago from the Knox's Committee. The latter being a number of citizens who many years ago formed an association for the purpose of preserving the property pertaining to John Knox's House & that adjoining & whose intention for some time past was to erect a monument to the memory of the great Scottish reformer. The church was not yet opened for public worship. There are apartments underneath the church for to be used as a school, vestry Room, etc, |
