[Situation] In Surgeon's Square A neat & well constructed building well fitted for classes. This building was opened for this school in September 1849. It was formerly an anatomical lecture room Mr. George Combe & Mr. James Simpson are the promoters of this Scheme of education. It was instituted for the purpose of affording to the children of the working classes of Edinburgh a usefull secular education formed on the model of the Birkbeck School of the London Mechanics Institution. The teaching is confined to matters purely secular but religious sentiments are cherished by inculcating reverence [for God] & obedience to his laws, The sectarian religious instructions is left entirely to the parents & spiritual teachers for this purpose the school is not opened on [Sundays]. It is supported by public subscription. It is conducted by Mr. Williams & a female assistance for the female class. On the monitorial system average attendance about 160. |
