[Market] There was a second fortification wall built in 1513 after the Battle of Flodden Field when an alarm was spread that an incursion of the English was intended, and in order to save the suburb of the Cowgate, which was then the residence of a great number of the nobility and gentry, it was resolved to build a wall to enclose it which was very soon Carried into effect. This extension of the town Wall Commenced at the Southeast side of the Castle Hill and descending the hill passed by the west end of the Grass MarKet where it was intersected by the West Port, And ascending the Highrigs Hill then turned eastward running along the north side of the gardens of Heriots Hospital and passed through [continued on page 235]
