A large plain structure [with] a handsome spire. This church was built in 1775 upon the [---] an old parish church. It is [well] fitted with seats, and [double galleries] sufficient to contain 2000 [---]. There are 160 free seats for the poor besides several pews reserved [for] the Elders &c. The church is [surrounded] by a large grave yard. This is [---] Collegiate church. The ministers are Revd [Reverend] John Paul D.D. [Doctor of Divinity] and the Revd [Reverend] J. [Veitch]. Their stipends jointly amounts to about [---].

That the old Kirk or church of St Cuthbert is very ancient is acKnowledged by
many historians and appears to have been built about the eight century. It is older than [recorded]

the monastery of Mailros often travelled from the Tweed to the Forth and always instructed [the]

From the vicinity of St. Cuthbert's church to the castle it is evident that in the frequent seiges
