[Situation] At Eastern extremity of Canongate. This name now applies to a small part of a street at the east end of Canongate the end of North back of Canongate and Abbey Hill At this place a gate formerly stood for the Convenience of collecting Customs anciently established here. There are no remains of the gate left for many years past but custom is still exacted on goods brought in or out of Canongate or N [North] back of Canongate this custom belongs to the Burgh of Canongate and contributes to its revenue |
