A narrow close or lane - extending with a gradual slope from High Street to the South west End of Physic Gardens. The houses are [from] 4 to 5 Stories high and [occupied] by persons in trade. It [derives] its name from David [Halkerston] of Halkerston, (brother to [the] ancestor of Hackstoun of [---] who fell in bravely defending passage against the [English] in 1544.
