[Situation] S.E [South East] of Royal Observatory On Nelson's Mont [Monument] A round tower 102 feet high, rising from a [broad] expanded base, containing a number of apartments, [origInally] intended for the Reception [and] accommodation of a certain [number] of of old tars who had Served [their] Country, but these rooms are [now] used as restaurateur, exhibition [rooms] &c. Above the doorway in bas relief [is] a crest of Nelson And a Miniature [Ship] of the "San Josef" An internal winding staircase leads to the top, which surmounted by a sign pole, used for Signalising vessels in the Firth [of] Forth, from the Summit is obtained One of [the] most magnificent And panoramic views of the city And environs, The view from [it] is said not to be surpassed even by that of the "Bay of Naples". This Monument has [also] attached a Neat lodge for the keeper, And is tastefully Surrounded by walks , Shrubbery And flowerbeds It was erected by private Subscription in 1815 to the Memory of the hero of the Nile and Trafalgar |
