This Hospital was founded by Bishop Spens of Aberdeen in 1479 for the support of 12 poor men. afterwards it was turned into a manufactory by a spirited Frenchman who came to Edinb. [Edinburgh] in the 17th century abt [about] which time it got the name and has since retained it.
