[Situation] On the North side of Canongate adjoining Tolbooth
A large structure of the plain Gothic style, in the form of a cross built in 1688. It stands in a large burying ground in which are numerous neatly finished monuments & grave stones. In this churchyard is intered Adam Smith and Dugald Stewart also the poet Ferguson had the Tombstone erected at his grave by Robert Burns. The church is seated for 1625 there are no seats exclusively appropriated as free seats but all the poor get seats free such as are not let or occupied. This church has a collegiate charge there are two ministers. The first charge is the Revd [Reverend] Andrew Bonar. The 2nd charge is by the Revd [Reverend] Daniel McFie.
