005 | [Situation] About 1 5/8 miles WNW [West North West] of Ratho village. The ruins of an old Castle or Country residence. Its sides and gables are entire, but its interior is void of walls or partitions. It has been a rectangular building, 3 storie [storeys] high, with an angular roof and a chimney attached It was entered from the east by a low square door, which opened upon the base of a sp [spiral] staircase, which led to the [top ?] of the building & to all th [the] intervening apartments - It is on the estate of C Ramsay Esq Barn [Barnton] The date 1630 is cut on a Stone over one of the windows of the building which is supposed to be the date of its erection. It has been in ruins during the memory of the oldest inhabitants in the neighbourhood. |
