[situation] About 1 3/4 miles north of the City of Edinburgh
A considerable Sea Port town situated on the Firth of Forth about 1 3/4 miles north of Edinburgh, it stands in the parishes of North & South Leith and is a Parliamentary Burgh. it consists of a number of irregularly built streets on low ground on each side of the Water of Leith. the town council of Edinburgh for some time exercised superiority over Leith, but in 1833 the Burgh Reform Act conferred upon it a separate magistracy, it also unites with Newhaven, Portobello & Musselburgh in returning a member to Parliament. The principal buildings are the Town Hall, Royal Exchange Buildgs [Buildings], Custom House, Trinity House, North & South Leith, and St John's Churches. it also contains several Banks, and mercantile establishments, the chief trade is with the West Indies, the Baltic, and the continent, and a trifling coast trade.
