It flows through part of Hamilton Parish from the point (on Trace 3) where the Hedge forms the Boundary & again from the Boundary (on Trace 2) from the other (west) end of the same fence till it enters the "Calder" & "Rotten Calter Water", at which point the "Calder Water", between this & East Kilbride Parish, change its name to "Rotten Calder" 'till it enters the Clyde, between Blantyre & Cambuslang Ph [Parish]. On [my] first inquiry the proprietor gave the distinction "East" but afterwards changed it to the well known name "Burnbank".

[et cetera] for damaging them & trespass. There are no raised graves or Head Stones, to shew that it has been a Burying ground. It is still the property of the Quakers.

The tradition connected it with it is , that it was carried by a witch, from Strathaven on her thumb, the mark of which may be seen, according to the tradition, on the west side. There is a worn ho [hole] resembling a thumb mark on th [the] side. It is regarded by the peo [people] as a great antiquity. At pres [present] it is principally used as a rubbing post, or stone for cattle. No accounts of the Parish, that have been seen, mention the stone. By the persons of the village near it is known as the "Muckle Stane," but by the more intelligent it is termed the Standing Stone. Either name would easily be identified on[?] plans.

The last named authority, who is about 80 years of age, remembers a Font being dug up at the place marked "Site of Chapelton." The site of the Chapel is not known by any authorities seen or referred to except the last named _ Thomas Shearer, who had it from tradition. No ruins, or any remains of buildings (except that of the Font) have ever been seen at the place marked "Site " etc. The place, however, is known as the "Chapel Sink" from a hollow being here in the ground. The "Chapel Well" which has been filled up for upwards of fifteen years is supposed to have been very old. It was 12 feet deep, but whether it was

They are probably the remnants of Druidical superstition". New Statistical Account. These stones are known simply as the "Three Stones". There is a tradition in the neighbourhood that three Lords were buried here, after being killed while looking on at a Battle. The stones are about 3 1/2 feet high & about as thick as flag stones. They stand upright being firmly fixed in the ground.

"To the memory of "the very Worthy Pillar of the "Church, Mr N. Gordon in Earlston, "in Gallowshire. Shot by a Partie of Dragoons on his way to Bothwell Bridge 22d [22nd] June 1679. Aged 65. "Inscribed by his Great Grandson, "Sir John Gordon Bart. 11th June 1772. The only part of the church now standing, is the west end gable, on the top of which the belfry, minus the bell, stands. The Grave-digger's house is built again it. The grave yard is still used for burying. The martyr's Tomb is against the wall forming the side of the Parish Road. The wall, remaining of the church, is not above the ordinary strength of those of the present day & the church appears to have been but one story high.
