054 [Situation] About 1 7/8 Miles W.S.W [West South West] of Balmae
The supposed site of an ancient Castle situated on the brink of a rocky cliff [by] the sea shore of the farm of Balmangan. It is traditionally handed down, that it had been one of those places of strength which were erected in feudal times to repel envasions on the Sea Coast &c. The only object that would now indecate of a Castle being here, is something similar to the remains of a fosse. Sysom in his description of Galloway Says "Adjacent to Balmangan Bay is a promontary called the Meikle Ross wherein is to be seen the ruins of an old Castle, where in times past some of the inhabitants have digged up silver plate as I am informed, as also therein have been found certain pieces of Silver, with a strange & uncouth impression thereon resembling the old Pictish coine".

At the entrance of Ross Bay,
on a promontory Called Manor Point
may still be traced the foundations
of a strong wall which had enclosed
a triangular piece of ground somewhat
less than an acre in extent. The Character
of this ruin is not unlike that near
Kirkandrews. It is described by Simpson
as the ruins of a castle of which no traditions
were then extant: &c.
